Hi,

I'm about to add a 256GB Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD to the laptop and use it as boot and system drive, and keep the HDD that came with the machine as a storage drive.

Can you please tell how to configure this setup?

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I see you need help in upgrading the SSD, on HP Notebook - 15-da0106nf. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you.

After reading your post, I did go through the Product specifications of your product and found that you have 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive installed on the PC.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to go through the Maintenance and Service guide of your HP notebook, and found that your PC supports NVMe, M.2 solid-state drives.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi Echo_Lake and thanks for your reply.

Indeed and as you mentioned, the laptop has a 1TB 5400 RPM SATA HDD. It also has a 16GB Intel Optane Memory that I can't use because it doesn't work with the OS version I'm running.

I knew earlier that the machine can support the M.2 NVMe SSD so I bought one. @Banhian helped me to know that here.

I'd like to know how to configure the setup I mentioned above (SSD as boot and system drive and the HDD as a storage one) and any help regarding this will be appreciated.

Thank you for posting back.

Follow the below steps to configure:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.

  2. Turn on the computer.

  3. Immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Computer Setup program opens.

  4. In the BIOS Setup utility, use the Right Arrow key to select the Storage tab.

  1. Figure: Storage tab

  1. Selecting the Storage tab
  2. Use the Down Arrow key to select Storage Options, and then press Enter.

  3. Next to Sata Emulation, select the controller mode you want, and then press F10 to accept the change.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for the reply Echo_lake.

Couldn't do what you suggested because It looks like there's no Storage section in the BIOS. The photos below show all the BIOS tabs.

I did try to install the OS but it didn't work. Placed the SSD, enabled the Legacy Mode in the BIOS and during the installation process, I cleaned the SSD and converted it to MBR using Windows Diskpart tool. When selecting the SSD to install the OS on, Windows Setup says that Windows Can't be installaed on that drive. It also says, this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.
