HP ENVY 15-j143na Laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to upgrade my HP ENVY 15-j143na Laptop 1T SSHD to a Seagate 1T SSD Barracuda STGS1000401.

Using a USB 3.0 SATA Adapter 3.0 converter cable, both brand new.

Windows 10 operating system,

When I plug in the usb the system beeps and recognises something is there, but the SSD does not show up in Disc management nor Device Manager. I have done an extensive search on the web and tried several possible solutions, so far none have worked.

I have checked all drivers and updated, checked for windows updates, made hidden devices visible, tried some commands in cmd, this helped to make hidden devices visible which did show a grayed out SSD. Try as I might though I was unable to get it to un-gray in Device Manager however, it was still not visible in Disc Manager. I also downloaded the cloning software  Seagate DisWizard and while this was all ready and will to copy data to the new SSD, it also was unable to detect this.

I continued to follow other tips, removing the ghost SSD and USB drivers in the hope that then rebooting would resolve this, again noting and in addition the SSD ghost was and still is gone.

I believe the problem is to do with OS and or BIOS, along with the SSD not being formatted which can't happen until it's recognised. I have tried swopping it out with the SSHD and that recognises something with memory but as no OS it can't boot the system.

So the SSD appears to work, but the system is unable to recognise it.

Please help

Then we have to think in terms of a bad SSD or a bad usb adapter. Can you try another known good SATA disk with the adapter?

I am thinking it may actually be formatted with a non-Windows file system like maybe Mac or Linux. Have you tried using diskpart from the command line. Open an elevated command prompt and type diskpart then type list disk and see if the SSD shows up there. If so we can clean (low level format) it and then initialize and mount it. If the system shows any sign of it whether greyed out, whatever we are on the right track and its not hopeless.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I tried your suggestion but only the SSHD is showing up in the list as you can see.

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 931 GB 5120 KB *

Can you try connecting the SSD with the USB adapter to another computer and see if it shows up in diskpart there? I'm thinking we may have to prep it on another machine.

Hi, yes tried it on another windows 10 laptop, I got the same results, including the the cmd diskpart

I don't personally, by I do have a friend who can test it for me, I will have to wait until Monday when he is back at work. Fortunately, his business is IT networking, I didn't want to impose but it is that last thing to try now so I will do that and let you know the outcome.

Thanks again for your help

Hi, popped into my friend's office, not something I like to do, however, he did have a cable that he lent me so I could test the drive and the drive showed up, what a pain but it did refresh my IT skills at least. In the process of cloning the drive now. In the process of trying to work this problem out, I seem to cause an issue with something else, there is always something else. :generic:
