Pavillion
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop has unsuccessfully been trying to update windows 10 for several days but fails.  I tried troubleshooting and in the end it just tells me "HP Pavilion notebook-BIOS needs to be upgraded before you can upgrade to windows 10" And then it tells me to manually uninstall it. That just doesn't sound right...?  Help?

Yes your AMD A10-8700P APU machine needs the F.45 Rev. A BIOS in order for the newer versions of Windows 10 to install.

Here is a direct download of that BIOS installer. Run this to update existing BIOS. No need to uninstall anything. The Microsoft message which says that uses a poor choice of words

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp80001-80500/sp80252.exe

Once you have this installed and rebooted try the Windows 10 upgrade again and it should work OK.

Post back with any questions but please accept as solution if it works.

After I downloaded the above .exe and ran it, the PC rebooted and the following Error popped up a:  AccelerometerSt.exe System error.  VCRuntime140.dll is missing.

Then that went away and the blue screen for updating Windown 10 came up.  Once followed direction for upgrade, about 3 minutes later the system said "Something went wrong & could not upgrade" This the same error I previously received when update failed.

Not sure exactly what to do at this point.  I did find the fix on HP Forum for the error I received above.  Should I fix that then try again?  Any advise?

Yes this upgrade to the BIOS is also known to disable the drive protection (accelerometer) driver so try fixing that and then run the upgrade. Also run HP Support Assistant and make sure the BIOS upgrade actually happened. Should have F45 rev A BIOS.

I fixed Accelerometer issue.  Then ran Bios upgrade again & restarted.  The version now shows:   F.45, 4/28/2017

Still waiting see if upgrade goes thru.
