Anyone have any ideas why the latest Windows update has failed to install - I have tried to install 7 times - each time I make sure the laptop is on and have USB available to ensure enough disk space.  Restarted when instructed to do so, but still it has failed to install - latest attempt today!  Any advice/guidance would be gratefully received - thanks.

@Tillycat44, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

There can be several reasons why the Windows update is failing to install on your HP laptop. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Check Disk Space: Ensure that you have sufficient disk space available on your laptop. Windows updates require a certain amount of free space to install.

Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security.
  • Click on Troubleshoot.
  • Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter to detect and fix issues.

Delete Temporary Files and Cached Data:

  • Open File Explorer.
  • Right-click on your main drive (usually C:) and select Properties.
  • Click on Disk Cleanup and delete unnecessary files.

Check for Corrupted System Files:

  • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  • Run sfc /scannow to check for and repair corrupted system files.

Install Updates in Safe Mode:

  • Restart your laptop and enter Safe Mode.
  • Try installing the update in Safe Mode to reduce interference from background processes.

Update Drivers:

  • Use HP Support Assistant to check for and install the latest drivers for your device:
    • Launch HP Support Assistant from the Start menu or taskbar.
    • Check for updates and install the recommended ones.

Windows Update Error Code:

  • If you receive a specific error code, look it up on Microsoft's support site for tailored solutions.

Clear Windows Update Cache:

  • Stop the Windows Update service (net stop wuauserv in Command Prompt).
  • Delete the content of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.
  • Restart the service (net start wuauserv).

Check for Conflicting Software:

  • Disable any third-party antivirus or firewall as it might interfere with the update process.

Perform System Restore: If the issue started recently, you can perform a system restore to a previous point when updates were working.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
