Notebook: HP 14s-dq1xxx

Product ID: 00326-30000-00001-AA167

Windows 10 Home (64-bit)

---------------------------------

Is the battery faulty or could it just be miscalibrated? If it's the latter, what's the solution?

Situation: laptop battery shows 100% in Windows taskbar (the bar where the clock and volume control is) when plugged in, but discharges to 0% within a few minutes (maybe 2-3 minutes) when unplugged. When plugged back in, in the taskbar it shows as recharged to 100% within a few minutes.

Battery report claims that battery goes to over 100% of capacity, then drops to <3% charge when unplugged.

HP's so-called Support Assistant shows battery as being "normal".

Hi @dannyzee4 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the behavior you're describing could indeed be a result of a miscalibrated battery or a faulty battery. the battery's charge status if it is out of sync with the actual charge level. Below are some steps you can follow to try and recalibrate the battery:

Let's try the below Troubleshoots steps.

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit

Step3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice  and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.
 Steps to Recalibrate the Battery:

Fully Charge the Battery:

  • Plug the laptop into a power source and let it charge until it reaches 100%. Ensure that it stays plugged in and fully charged for an extra hour or so to stabilize.

Discharge the Battery:

  • Once fully charged, unplug the laptop and use it normally, allowing the battery to discharge completely. You might want to leave the laptop on until it shuts down automatically due to low battery.

Leave the Laptop Off:

  • After the laptop shuts down from lack of power, leave it off for about 5 hours. This step ensures the battery is completely drained and the system can recalibrate its battery readings.

Fully Recharge the Battery Again:

  • Plug the laptop back in and allow it to charge back up to 100% without interruption. This process should help Windows correctly report the battery’s charge and recalibrate the system’s battery monitoring.

If the Issue Persists:

If recalibration doesn’t resolve the issue, then the battery may be faulty, especially since it’s discharging rapidly after showing 100%. In this case:

  • Battery Health Check: Use tools like HP Battery Check (available via HP Support Assistant) or third-party software to check the health of your battery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
