That key is maintained by Microsoft and once activated it is associated with you and your PC.

if the PC came with windows 10 or 11 home and you inadvertently installed 10 or 11 pro then you need to install home.

If you purchased a retail key, once it was activated then Microsoft has a record of it just like the HP or OEM key.

If asking for product key during a reset or a clean install of windows 11 then just skip past that request and go ahead and start windows.

After windows fully installed then log into your microsoft account and look for your devices.  Your PC should show up.

Check and see if it is now activated.
