Common problems for Battery

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Spectre x360 which I use to give Powerpoint talks at our local history group.  Normally I charge fully and don't bother to take the cable for a 1 to 1.5 hour session.  Last Saturday, knowing it would take longer, I took the cable and plugged it in from the start.  A dongle from the other USB C port connected to the projector via HDMI.  To my chagrin, the laptop would not project and charge at the same time and I ran out of power.  My wife had to run home and get my much older, but more reliable Lenovo which will both charge and project at the same time.  Anybody know what is going wrong?

Hi @Carlton8,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Spectre x360 might have a power delivery issue when both charging and projecting at the same time. There could be several reasons for this behavior.

Power Limitation: Some laptops have limitations on the amount of power they can draw when multiple peripherals are connected. When you connect the projector and charge the laptop simultaneously, it might exceed this power limit, causing the laptop to prioritize one function over the other.

USB-C Port Configuration: The USB-C ports on your laptop might not support simultaneous charging and video output. Some laptops have specific ports dedicated to charging, while others can handle both charging and data transfer simultaneously.

Driver or Firmware Issue: It's possible that there could be a driver or firmware issue causing this behavior. Updating your laptop's drivers and firmware to the latest version might resolve the issue.

Power Adapter Compatibility: Ensure that the power adapter you're using is compatible with your laptop and provides enough power to both charge the laptop and power the projector simultaneously.

Settings Configuration: Check your laptop's power settings to see if there are any options related to power delivery or charging behavior that could be affecting this.

Hardware Defect: In rare cases, there could be a hardware defect with either the laptop or the power adapter that's causing the issue.

To troubleshoot the problem further, you could try:

  • Using a different USB-C port on your laptop.
  • Trying a different power adapter or USB-C cable.
  • Updating your laptop's drivers and firmware.
  • Checking for any relevant power or charging settings in your laptop's BIOS or operating system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Many thanks for your several helpful suggestions.  I have since tested the same situation at home and the laptop both charged and fed my presentation to the projector at the same time.  The only difference in the set-up was that I was using two power sockets whilst in the meeting room both were connected to the same extension cable.  The two-socket extension is used regularly and no problems have been observed previously, but I shall go and test it out in unstressed circumstances and see if the problem repeats.  At ;least I shall then know whether this was the cause.

Thanks again

Carlton
