Microsoft Windows 11

I'm wondering if I can use the USB-C port on a HP ENVY 17 to output display with an adapter. This is the second external monitor I'm adding to the laptop, and I'm hoping to have it function as an extended display instead of mirroring another monitor. Is this the way to do it? or do I have to do it a different way?

Your machine could be one of the following machines

              https://support.hp.com/ie-en/product/hp-envy-laptop-pc-17-cg1000/35801038/model/2100381427/product-i...

For example

              HP ENVY Laptop 17-cg1004nc

It has 1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 10Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge) port you should be able to connect its USB-C port using USB-C to  DP cable or USB-C to HDMI cable. In theory you can use USB-C to DVI cable but I have not tested this, you can try.
