I have a HP2000 I bought about a year ago.  It has 4g of memory which isn't turning out to be enough for a Ph.d CS project I'm working on.  Since I'm a student, I don't have enough money to buy another whole laptop.  So, is it possible to get another 2g of memory installed in this laptop?  I can do the installing myself (the warrantee has already been voided by my installing Linux on this machine a year ago) so all I want to buy is the part, not the installation. Is that possible?

Hi,

HP 2000 is a series of dozens models, what is yours ? Anyway, based on the following link, a tipical HP 200 can have 8Gb of RAM:

   http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329744-3848802-3848802-5091493-5128938....

There are few questions you need to answer:

1. What is the OS of your machine ? 32 bit OS can't address to anything more than 4Gb in this case.

2. What is the current configuration ? 2 x 2 or 4 x 1 because the machine has only 2 slots for RAM. From there you can work our the number you need.

You can check the following link to buy RAM for your machine:

I have upgraded the memory on this laptop to 8 gig (2x4g sticks).

the memory is regonized and show in the system configuration.

however the ram definition in the machine says that only 3.2 gig is useable.

I know the specfor this machine says it will accomidate 8 GIG of memory.

I figure there must be a new BIOS required to allow the firmware to communicate tot he operating system that the full amount of 8 gig of memeory is avaialble and useable.

the operating system of the laptop is windows 8.1 x64 byte.

is there a fix to enable the operating system to acknowledge and use the 8 gig of memory installed on the motherboard?

I used the cmd:

MSCONFIG

and modified the BOOT Settings:

Then Click on Advance Otptions

UNCHECKED the box for  use Maxium

and modified the storage advance setting ... UNCHECKED ..... Maximum memory

and after the REBOOT all the Memory in the 8 GB is used (using 2 X 4GB Slots)
