Hi @far10han ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue you are experiencing with your HP Notebook 15-af131dx (ENERGY STAR), where the battery indicator is showing abnormal readings (e.g., 265% charged) and the laptop is not starting, could be caused by several factors. Here are the most likely reasons and steps you can take to solve the issue:
Possible Reasons:
Faulty Battery: Even if the battery has been removed, the system may still be getting incorrect data from the battery controller, especially if the battery itself was faulty or its sensors malfunctioned before you removed it.
Corrupted Battery Driver/BIOS: Incorrect battery readings can also result from a corrupted battery driver or BIOS issue that causes the system to display erroneous power levels.
Power Supply Issues: The charging circuitry or power supply could be malfunctioning, causing the system to display incorrect charging statuses even when the battery is removed.
Motherboard or Battery Circuit Damage: There might be an issue with the motherboard or the charging circuit, leading to incorrect power management signals being relayed to the system.
Solutions to Try:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
- Disconnect the laptop from the power source.
- Remove any connected peripherals (external USB devices, etc.).
- Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the charger without the battery, and try to power on the laptop.
2. Check and Reinstall Battery Drivers
- If the laptop turns on, try uninstalling and reinstalling the battery drivers:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Batteries section.
- Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop, and Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.
3. Update BIOS
If the battery and power management system are not working correctly, a BIOS update could help resolve the issue. To update the BIOS:
- Go to HP’s official website and search for your laptop model's support page.
- Download the latest BIOS update.
- Follow the instructions on the page to update your BIOS.
4. Test the Charger and Battery Separately
If the laptop is not turning on, try a different charger that is compatible with your notebook to rule out a faulty charger. If you can access a working battery, test with that as well to see if the issue is isolated to the battery or charging circuit.
5. Inspect the Motherboard for Physical Damage
If none of the above steps work, there might be a deeper issue with the motherboard or battery controller. In such cases, opening the laptop to check for any visible damage to the charging circuit or connectors might help.
6. Check for Power Supply Issues
If your laptop works fine without the battery, there might be an issue with the battery's charging mechanism. Ensure that the charger is providing adequate power and check the charging port for dust or damage.
