HP ZBook G3 17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear HP community,

I'm a bit disappointed in looking for HP notebook hardware upgrades for my ZBook G3 17 (even most other HP notebook), because I can't find most of the parts (miss a detailed parts list in Germany).

I have a ZBook G3 17 with lower end hardware - no external video card, i5 CPU, 8GB RAM and 1600 x 900 screen, I will try to upgrade it a bit. Inside is just one cooler for CPU, the cooler and heat pipe for graphics card is missing, where can I get it and which gfx cards fit inside (do I have to look more detailed to specifications of gfx cards? Wich CPUs can I use for upgrade? Wich memory is specified and tested for this G3 (is there any list)? Can I connect a full HD screen of a defectiv ZBook G3 17 (screen should be ok) and just install it, or is there a hardware or software issue?

Thanks a lot

Rubeen

I have the 15 inch version of the Zbook G3 which uses many of the same parts as the 17 inch version you ask about but the 17 inch also accepts a somewhat broader range of MXM video cards. I did the upgrades you ask about to mine other than the CPU which we will discuss. The starting point for you is the Service Manual:

Manual

The CPU is soldered to the motherboard so no way to upgrade that. As you see, the heatsink for the MXM video card is not included and you must buy both the video card and the heatsink piece and it can get quite expensive. I paid about $400 US for mine and felt fortunate as HP's price in the Parts Store was well over $1000.

Uses DDR4-2133 SO-DIMM and DDR4-2400 will work. Has 4 slots and max of 64 gigs (4 x 16). You have options to upgrade to a FHD or UHD screen but again, the price will be quite significant. If you have another screen it can just be swapped over hinges up fairly easily.

Let us know what kind of budget you are contemplating as all the upgrades you are asking about could well outstrip the cost of a newer mobile workstation. But I also consider myself pretty good at finding these parts for the best possible price and as long as you are willing to stay with me, we can work on your upgrades.
