Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello to all...

Using this new laptop, I have some problems using USB ports. When I connect a specific external hard drive (Zalman ZM-VE350). Windows detects the device and produces a "dong-ding" like sound indicating the peripheral detection. Next to this, windows produces a "ding-dong" like sound indicating the device disconnection.

Windows repeats this indefinitely until I disconnect the USB cable of the zalman HDD.

I have check this :

  • Test the device on 3 other laptops
  • Change the hard drive inside the zalman enclosure
  • Update bios
  • Update all drivers through device manager
  • Test with a SSD instead of a HDD inside the zalman device
  • The current is less than 1 Amp.
  • USB ports work perfectly with USB keys and HDD dock station (with external alimentation)

Any help will be appreciated...

Thanks in advance!

Does it work with other devices OR external drives/flash drives ? Please to not try to fix your machine, use different external HDD instead.  NOT all external HDD's are the same specially from unknown names.

Regards.

Hello Banhien,

First of all : I did a mistake in the title of my post. It's not a "hp pavilion 15-cw1068wm" but a "hp pavilion 15-cw1043nb".

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have try other peripherals :

  • several flash drive from several manufacturers (sorry, I said USB keys, like we said here in Belgium... sorry for my english)
  • HDD docking station
  • SSD and HDD external drives
  • USB wireless mouse

All are functionning perfectly. The Zalman extrenal drive (ZM-VE350) works perfectly on other laptops...

The reason why I use the zalman is simple. It can emulate a DVD drive using ISOs files, but it can be set as simple external drive. The DVD emulation is very usefull for softwares installation... Here is more information about this tool : https://www.zalman.com/contents/products/view.html?no=20

To install necessary sofwares present on my Zalman, I had remove its HDD (wich is a tradionnal 2.5" HDD) and I put it into a HDD dock station. This one works very well on my laptop (as said in the first post). Unfortunately, the PC refused the Zalman...

So, at this point, I think that :

  • HDD present in the Zalman is OK (because it works using HDD docking station)
  • My ZM-VE350 is OK (because it works on other laptops)
  • USB ports of my laptop are OK (because other USB peripherals works well)
  • The power available on USB ports is OK (because the maximum power needed by the HSS used during tests is 500mA)
  • The power avalaible on USB ports is OK (because the test released with zalman using an SSD doen't work anymore)

I'm disapointed and don't know how to found a solution... My colleague had received the same laptop than me but he didn't open the box yet 😭

I will test on his machine when he will decide himself...

Thanks again for your help. At this point, the issue is NOT yet fixed.

Using Windows 10, you can mount ISO file as a CD/DVD drive.

USB port works with all other devices. Must be something unknown from Zalman extrenal . I would not risk to damage my machine just for an unknown factor.

Thanks for your reply. The useful thing with this Zalman feature (emulate DVD drive) is to start a PC from it (for maintenance of several PC for example). Example : internal hard drive of a PC doesn't start, you can start from the zalman. This is not possible by mounting an ISO file under Windows environment on a PC that is not starting up... In my case, it's very important because the half part of my clients call me because their (old) PC doesn't startup due to HDD trouble. In these context, you can understand how much it's important for me.

I agree with your conclusion except of this : the zalman work well on other PC (old, new, under windows 10, 7, 8 and also under Linux).

The reason why I use Zalman external HDD is explained above, and then, I choosed to used it also as simple external HDD.  It's very convenient to avoid multiple HDD, flash drive, DVD, etc. when I'm at customer home or work. Regarding symptoms, the PC is good and the zalman too, but ther's a problem... Perhaps a day, I will be exposed to the same issue with another type of USB peripheral... I don't know...

Thanks again for your help.
