Zbook 15 - Upgrading The SSD!

Hi Everyone,

I own the HP Zbook 15 (G1), and I would like to upgrade the current storage (Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD) to a higher capacity one.

My current SSD performance according to (http://www.userbenchmark.com/) is:

• Sequential Read up to 505 MB/s
• Sequential Write up to 472 MB/s

I am thinking to upgrade to Samsung 2TB 850 Evo 2.5" SATA III SSD.  It is not a PRO Series like the one currently installed, but according to its specs, its performance looks very good:

• Sequential Read up to 540 MB/s
• Sequential Write up to 520 MB/s

I am not sure that I will realy get that speced numbers, but will the diffrence in perormance be noticeable with the new 2TB?

For the records,  B&H list the read & write speed for the new Samsung 1TB 850 PRO Series SATA 2.5" SSD as:

• Sequential Read up to 550 MB/s
• Sequential Write up to 520 MB/s

The speed difference will be subtle if not entirely theoretical. You will not notice any difference.

I have got another idea;  What  if I keep the current internal 1TB SSD for system and applications, and buy two 1TB SSDs (Samsung 1TB 850 PRO Series SATA III) with a portable USB 3.0 RAID enclosure (CineRAID Dual Drive USB 3.0 Portable RAID Enclosure) be used as external RAID 0 storage?

RAID 0 sounds very good, but I am not sure if it will offer any performance advantage (Comparing to internal SATA III SDD) since it will at the end interface to the computer with USB 3.0 which might be a bottleneck to the RAID O, thus it may not provide real increase in performance.

So, which setup do you think I should go with which should provide the best combination of performance, and reliability?

RAID-0 is not going to be reliable. Just logically, if you join 2 hard drives together you double the risk of failure since if either fails they both fail. And you are also correct that channeling a RAID-0 array through a USB 3.0 interface is going to run up against bandwidth limits. I think you could get by fine with a single 2 TB USB 3.0 external drive. I even question the need for the speed of an SSD if it is going to be external. You can save a lot of money by just buying a 2.5 inch 2 TB USB 3.0 external drive.

Many thanks man for your feedback .. you have been helpful.

HDD will not cut it for me and I realy need  the best performance SDD becouse I am a video editor, and colorest, and the application I use are very demanding.  So, I just will buy the 2TB SDD with  a suitable case.

You are not going to be happy with the data transfer speed of any external drive after you have used an internal SSD and video editing is one of those apps that demands the fastest possible disk access. My suggestion is that you transfer any video files you are working on to the internal disk and then use the external for long-term storage. Even an external SSD is not going to give the performance you demand.

Thanks for your advice, and this is what I will do. 

I will upgrade my current SSD with new Samsung 2TB 850 Pro, and will use the old one as extrnal SSD storage.

the speeds, mostly theoricals, are limited thanks to the SATA3 limits. if you just want to upgrade to a larger one, just clone the OS on the new one. I change a HDD to a SSD, just for the velocity. it was awful, becuase the HDD was not in Simple Drive Mode. but I make the cloning sucessfull.
