There is an open bay where I could add a SATA HD, but I need a part number for the HD rubber sleeve/HD cable that I don't have. Other laptops configured for retail with a drive, such as the 17-cn3097nr are of course supplied with these parts. To date HP Support and HP PartsSurfer have been no help.

Hi:
I imagine that if the 17-cn3xxx model series still has a SATA connector on the motherboard to add a 2.5" drive, you can use the drive cable part number listed in chapter 3, page 20 of the older 17-cn1xxx model series.
The hard drive cable is available as spare part number M75893-001.
Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)
There is no rubber sleeve part number listed.
Here are two listings on eBay that may work:
This one has both parts:

This one has the caddy only:

Paul, your reply is very much appreciated. I have reached out to the ebay seller with "both parts."
Assuming I am successful in obtaining the necessary hardware, as my laptop was not initially configured with both a SATA HD and the M.2 SSD, would you expect the SATA HD to be recognized by the laptop/BIOS?

You're very welcome.
Yes, as long as the notebook has the SATA connector on the motherboard that the hard drive cable plugs into and you plugged it in correctly (those delicate ribbon connectors are a pain to get right), the SATA drive should work fine.
Note that notebooks that come with dual drive configurations from the factory have no operating system on the hard drive and it normally can only be used for storage.
This service teardown video for the 17-cn0xxx model series shows how to remove and replace the 2.5" drive.

You said "...as long as the notebook has the SATA connector on the motherboard that the hard drive cable plugs into and you plugged it in correctly (those delicate ribbon connectors are a pain to get right), the SATA drive should work fine."
Great!
You went on to say "...the hard drive...it normally can only be used for storage."
That's all I want/need it for. I would choose to have my OS on the SSD where it is now.
Thanks again.

Anytime.
Glad to have been of assistance.
I wrote what I wrote about the OS is because some folks want to dual boot operating systems and think they can put one on one drive and another on the other drive and it causes the Windows boot manager fits.

Interesting, I have dual booted a couple of my computers, but it never crossed my mind to do so on two different hard drives!
