Just tried this on my Pavilion gaming laptop (model 16-a0032dx) AND IT WORKED!

Thank you for figuring out this workaround for a ridiculous problem. I was hesitant to try the solution that other users have posted which involved messing with code, but I have been at my wit's end with the backlight timing out and I've only had the laptop for a few weeks.

As mentioned you have to redo it every time you restart, but it is so quick and easy I don't mind compared to suffering through a backlight that keeps turning off.

Although some units have thsi capability, be aware that many of the Spectre units DO NOT support changing the Backlight Timeout after x seconds to "Never".

I have 2 other units  DO allow me to get into BIOS, where the  settings menu has an item where I can set the keyboard backlight to “Always On”.

I recently purchased another unit from a big box store, and this feature was NOT available. SMH.

For me, this is a very important consideration. It drives me nuts having the backlight on my keyboard constantly go off while I am trying to read something on the screen, and then looking down, just as I want to start  typing something into that web form, etc, that I was just looking at, I find that my keyboard is all dark, requiring me to press a key to get the thing to come back on. (In order to reactivate the backlight one has to touch a key and it

pops back on and only stays on for 30 seconds.)  What a PITA , and on a $2000 unit no less. SMH

I web surfed, and found a number of questions and frustrations along the same line, concerning a way to reset the backlight so it is always on.  What I was able to find out, after talking several hours with tech support, and the sales people, and also giving them the model numbers of my 2 units that DO have this capability, was that the various products that HP sells in this Spectre line have different configurations (look at the Product  #s). My understanding is that the secret code words, or code characters, that you have to look for in the product # are the letters AV. The support person in the sales Department at HP, after consulting with her managers, advised me that this was the thing to look for. If your product code has an AV at the end of it, then my understanding is that it will have this ability to modify the backlight timeout setting from the BIOS. All that being said, I have another unit on the way that ( lucky for me) has this AV at the end of the Product #,   and after it gets here, I will check to see if indeed, it really does have this feature.

Here are models that are confirmed in their Operational characteristics:

3N384AV – DOES have the ability to change timeout

2FW62AV  – DOES have the ability to change timeout

9GB30UA#ABA – Does NOT have the ability to change timeout

I have model 5FP25UA#ABL (GemCut)and i dont have the ability to set the time out in the bios either.

But back up about a year and i found this forum that helped me and a few others .

i was able to run the driver made by small89 and Ecos_ (page 2 and 3 of this thread) and had no issues ever since.

I have to mention that i struggled a LOT before it worked, I spent numerous hours on the phone with tech support.

Some where nice and helped me , some where just not concern with the issue and just told me that it is made this way and there's nothing that can be done about it. Dont get your hopes up too much about a future fix as i got the promise something would be done about it but in reality, they will never do it because they just dont care about you, the people that gives them hardly earned money so they can satisfy there share owners...

Anyway, I had another issue about auto rotation not functioning anymore that went as far has HP making me send my Laptop  to repair only to return a week later not fixed. I can not tell you how much frustration HP gave me with all this.

They even sent me a WIN10 usb key and made me re-install the hole OS to fix the problem witch made me loose my backlight  again. and all my data. Auto rotation got fixed but, the backlight was gone, again !

I got very angry at HP and had to spend more time on the phone with some cust, service guy . An extreme pain in you know where testing my patience to the very limit only to realize they would never take me seriously.

I said i wanted my money back and they offered me a 500$ credit on HP products and i had to return my 2600$ machine !!

In the end, they offered me to exchange my Laptop for a re-furbished one that was the exact same model, in such a manner that made me think; they must be joking and think i'm really dumb.🤔

That's it. I was deeply insulted, all the way down to my «core» So i told them to go f.*** themselves and many more other things i wont put here for obvious reasons but i can say the little guy at the other end of the phone must have hanged up feeling deeply ashamed.

The conclusion is that i tried myself to fix my kb issue and succeeded with the driver.

No problems so far after about 6 months but i still have a doubt about how long before it comes back.

As quoted by Small89, ; the only issue i see with this is that the signing cert is valid to 11/24/2021, maybe it refuses to work after that

So we'll see in 10 months.

Cheers ✌️
