My HP Chromebook is about two weeks past its warranty date and the back-light keyboard is no longer working. Keyboard diagnostics does not identify a problem. Suggestions much appreciated.

You will have to realize that unless you saved data to an sd card, there is nothing to save. Your browser passwords and other passwords that you have allowed to be saved will be stored in Google Password manager. All you need is your Google login, which is an email address and the password to that email account.
A ChromeBook is a browser, not a laptop.
The difference is that a laptop has an SSD or HDD to store data locally and an operating system such as Windows, Linux or a MacOS.
A ChromeBook has Chromium OS, which actually makes your ChromeBook a browser. You can't install applications like Microsoft Office to a ChromeBook. You can only use cloud based productivity software and generally your work is stored in one of your cloud accounts.

Try performing a powerwash.
