Hi @nikki4974

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry your new HP 15 i5 Ultra laptop is heating up excessively and draining its battery so quickly—it must feel like the performance is slipping away before you can even settle into your work.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help restore cooler, longer-lasting operation.

1. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

These updates improve thermal control and power management.

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page
  • Enter your exact model (e.g., HP 15s-fq5xxx or HP 15s-eq2xxx)
  • Select Windows 11, then download and install:
    • BIOS Update
    • Chipset Driver
    • Intel or AMD Graphics Driver

Restart your laptop after installation.

2. Switch to Balanced or Power Saver Mode

This reduces CPU load and heat generation.

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery
  • Under “Power Mode,” select Balanced or Best Power Efficiency
  • Avoid “Best Performance” unless plugged in

3. Disable Background Apps

Unnecessary apps can drain battery and overwork the processor.

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  • Go to Startup tab and disable non-essential apps
  • In Settings > Apps > Startup, turn off background apps you don’t use

4. Clean Air Vents and Elevate the Laptop

Blocked airflow causes heat buildup.

  • Use compressed air to gently clean the side and bottom vents
  • Place the laptop on a hard surface or cooling pad to improve ventilation

5. Run HP Battery Check

This tool checks battery health and charging behavior.

6. Limit High-Performance Apps on Battery

Apps like video editors, browsers with many tabs, and games can spike CPU usage.

  • Close unused tabs and apps when on battery
  • Use lightweight alternatives for browsing and media playback

Let me know how your laptop responds after these adjustments. If the battery life improves and the heat subsides, you’ll be able to enjoy smoother, cooler sessions without the constant worry.
