My laptop battery caught fire the other day and wondering what to do from here? An electrician came to verify plug in wall and its not the plug in wall. I believe the battery was defective. Where do I go from here?

Hi @Racuss

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds like a terrifying experience, and I’m really sorry you had to go through that. A laptop battery catching fire is a serious safety hazard, and it’s good that you’ve already ruled out issues with the wall outlet.

Immediate Steps to Take

  1. Do Not Use the Laptop – Even if it seems functional, there could be lingering damage that makes it unsafe.
  2. Disconnect the Power Source – If the laptop is still plugged in, unplug it immediately and move it to a safe, well-ventilated area.
  3. Avoid Touching the Battery – If the battery swelled, leaked, or burned, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
  4. Ventilate the Area – Lithium-ion battery fires can release harmful fumes, so open windows and ensure fresh air circulation.
  5. Contact HP Support Immediately – HP has specific procedures for handling battery failures.
  6. Follow the instruction shared in the private message to reach our phone support.

I know this must have been a stressful situation, but you’re taking the right steps. Stay safe!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
