Hi @mrdisco,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop's battery is discharging even when the laptop is powered off, there are a few possible reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Update BIOS/UEFI: Ensure that your laptop's BIOS or UEFI firmware is up to date. HP often releases updates to address various issues, including power management.

Check for Background Processes: Sometimes, background processes or applications may be running in the background, draining the battery even when the laptop is turned off. Make sure all applications are closed before shutting down the laptop.

Fast Startup Feature: Some laptops come with a "fast startup" feature, which can cause the laptop to enter a hibernation-like state rather than a complete shutdown. Try disabling fast startup to see if it resolves the issue.

  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Click on "Power Options."
  • Select "Choose what the power buttons do" on the left.
  • Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable."
  • Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)."

Check Power Settings in Windows:

  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Click on "Power Options."
  • Select your preferred power plan.
  • Click on "Change plan settings."
  • Click on "Change advanced power settings."
  • Look for options related to sleep, hibernation, and power-off states, and ensure they are configured correctly.

Battery Calibration: Sometimes, recalibrating the battery can help. Charge the battery fully, then allow it to discharge completely, and then charge it fully again.

Faulty Hardware or Battery: If the issue persists, it might be a hardware problem.

Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your operating system is up to date with the latest Windows updates, as they may include fixes for power-related issues.

By going through these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the problem causing your HP laptop's battery to discharge when powered off.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
