I just bought the HP 255 15.9 inch G9 notebook and started setting it up. I let it charge for a couple of hours and then went to turn it on. Nothing happened when I pressed the power button, so then I tried plugging it in and trying again, which worked. A couple minutes later I'm in windows and notice that the battery is at 1% and not charged at all, how can I fix this without having to return it back?

I suggest charging it overnight. Your laptop may have a faulty battery.
If that does not resolve the issue, you will need to initiate a return for a replacement or repair.
I do not believe there is any other option available.
I can understand your frustration.

I will do the former for now. However, I would like to ask what colour the LED should be while it's charging, because it's currently white while not storing any power, thanks in advance.

It should be amber when it is charging.
You definitely need to make contact with HP or the vendor you purchased it from.
