I have replaced my laptop battery after it was failing. I bought the battery from an HP approved supplier and followed the installation instructions.

The battery is not charging and the laptop does not boot without AC power. The battery is connected as when the laptop first booted, the windows battery icon was showing it was charging, but then stopped, and has not gone past 6%. The HP Support Assistant records 'unknown battery' and the battery test reports "Charged (6%), no battery".

As per the HP support pages (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4194541-4194587-16), I have:

1. performed a hard reset (disconnect battery, Hold power button for 15 sec) and reboot

2. performed the bios default restore and reboot

3. performed a bios update and reboot (but unnecessary)

4. uninstalled Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and rebooted

5. HP PC diagnostics component test: Battery not installed (primary)

 

Still doesnt work.

Just to add to the information, I have conducted a battery report at the command prompt (C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg /batteryreport) and have included the resultant report below.

 

The report shows what I am observing: the battery starts to charge and then after a number of seconds, the charge is suspended.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. Thanks for bringing this to our notice.

 

I see that you are facing battery-related issues on your system. Do not worry, we are here to fix it.

 

Did you make any hardware or software-related changes to it other than battery replacement?

 

It looks like your Notebook is not charging the Battery, We will surely assist you with this issue

 

Please perform below shown steps to resolve the issue:

Step 01. Click on the Start Button

Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager

Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left

Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall

Note: This Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again

Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook

Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter

Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute

Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter

Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

 

After performing all the steps if you are facing the same issue still, please perform three more steps:

1. Run a Battery Check in HP Support Assistant[Install the Software if it's not available]

Note: Replace the Battery If Health Check Status shows Replace

2. Update the latest BIOS for your Notebook from HP Support Site

3. Please check your Notebook with a known good Power Adapter & Battery from a different Notebook 

Note: If a known good battery is also not charging we need to replace the system board

 

How to improve the life of a Battery:

1. It is not advisable to use the Notebook when the Power Adapter is connected

2. It is not advisable to keep the Power Adapter plugged in even after the Battery is fully charged

3. You need to let the battery drain completely before charging again

4. Power Plan should be set correctly for extended battery life

5. Please keep the Screen Brightness at lower level

6. Please turn OFF Wi-Fi Connection when not in use

7. Please remove the CD/DVD's from the Optical Drive when not in use

thank you for your reply.

 

on "Please perform the below shown steps to resolve the issue" steps 1-9. as I said in my original message, I'd already done that.

 

on "after performing the steps...", I'd already run the battery check and reupdated the BIOS (not required as the BIOS was up to date). 

 

The HP Support Assistant still cannot recognise the battery. I've just run the check again and "Charged (93%); Primary Battery: No Battery"

 

after rerunning the battery report and removing and reinserting the power adapter, it is now charging. Currently sitting at 93%.

 

The problem must be with the Support Assistant as Windows can see a battery but the support assistant cannot.
