Common problems for Battery

HP Recommended

I have been having issues with my laptop battery for a while now and nothing I have tried seems to fix the problem.

i bought a new charger that was compatible with my laptop after I lost mine in a recent move. Since then, my battery status in HP Support Assistant comes up as unknown (0% not charging) whilst on the taskbar, the battery is shown as 0% charging while plugged in. If I unplug the charger then my laptop switches off but there is no change in the charging progress.

I have tried the various troubleshooting steps on the following article and it has had no impact:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4194541-4194587-16

I'm not particularly tech savvy so I'm unsure if there may be another issue at play or if this is a sign that I need another battery.

My HP Laptop model is HP Notebook - 14-bs039na.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Hi @HR589,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how frustrating it is when your HP Notebook – 14-bs039na shows 0% not charging and shuts down when unplugged, even after trying the steps in the HP article. Let’s go through the recommended troubleshooting process.

This issue usually points to:

  • A battery communication failure (firmware or driver)
  • A faulty battery or charging circuit
  • A non-HP charger that doesn’t meet power specifications

Recommended Steps

1. Verify Charger Compatibility

  • Ensure the charger meets HP’s specifications for your model (voltage and wattage).
  • If possible, test with an original HP adapter.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the charger and power on.

3. Update BIOS and Drivers

4. Run HP Battery Check

  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to Battery Check.
  • If the status is “Unknown” or “Replace,” the battery may be faulty.

5. Uninstall Battery Drivers

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Batteries.
  • Right-click and uninstall:
    • Microsoft AC Adapter
    • Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
  • Restart your laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

 Hi Vikram,

As previously mentioned, I have followed all the troubleshooting advice given in the article linked above.

None of the suggestions have fixed the problem and my laptop still does not power without the charger or appear to charge with the charger. I believe the battery may be faulty as the battery status in HP Support Assistant is listed as unknown. Could you recommend a battery model that would be compatible with my laptop?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
