I have had a HP Pavilion 15-E078EA laptop given to me but with no battery, how can I find out which battery I need.

You need either of these two batteries:
(15)Battery:6-cell, 62-Wh, 2.80-Ah, Li-ion battery 710417-001 6-cell, 47-Wh, 2.20-Ah, Li-ion battery 710416-001
This is not a genuine HP battery but comes from a reliable aftermarket UK amazon prime battery maker and would work fine for you:
This eBay UK seller says the battery is "genuine" but also looks like an aftermarket part:
I am having trouble locating a genuine HP battery but on a laptop of the age that model is, it should make no difference.
