Hi @Guru1992,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing, where your HP laptop shuts down when the battery reaches 74%, could be related to a few possible causes, such as a faulty battery, power settings, or a calibration issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and check your settings to ensure the system is not set to shut down at a certain battery percentage.
  • Ensure your laptop is set to shut down only at low battery levels (5% or lower).

Update Battery Drivers

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand the Batteries section.
  • Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall.
  • Restart your laptop, and Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.

Calibrate the Battery

If the battery is miscalibrated, it might not accurately reflect its charge level, leading to shutdowns.

  • Charge your battery to 100%.
  • Use the laptop on battery power until it shuts down.
  • Recharge it back to 100% without interruption.

Run Battery Diagnostics

  • Many HP laptops come with built-in diagnostics tools.
  • Restart your laptop and press F2 or F10 (depending on your model) to access HP's system diagnostics.
  • Run the battery test to check for any issues.

Check for BIOS Update

  • Go to the HP Support website and check if there's a BIOS update available for your model.
  • Install the update, as outdated firmware can sometimes cause battery-related issues.

Test with AC Power

  • If the laptop functions fine with the charger plugged in, this might confirm the issue is battery-related.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
