HP Stream AX0iNR
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm trying to install linux (elementary os)  on a 128 GB evo drive plugged into the realtek card reader.  When I enter the bios settings (F 10)  there is no mention of this drive, anywhere.  The boot menu allows one to UEFI boot Windows on the hard-wired 32 GB SSD drive mmcblk0p1 that his hard wired into the machine.  There is also opportunity to boot "ubuntu" from the internal 32 Gb SSD.  But I want to have ubuntu boot from the 128 GB evo drive.  I looked at firmware management and it said the bios I have is the latest one, no update possible.  The 128 GB drive appears to be plugged in properly, because I can install linux on it.

Hi

Could you give the SKU number of the machine please to precisely ID your model.

If it was going to boot from the Card then it may only work on the PORT side port, Left hand side, if at all.

Also if you place Grub on the main Drive it may very well point and pick up the device.

If in doubt please ask.

I can't find the SKU number.  All I have is HP AX01NR notebook.  I did place Grub on the main Drive (mmckblk0), and when I choose "Os boot Manager (UEFI) -- ubuntu" it comes up with a bare grub> prompt.  But grub is located only the mmckblk0, not on the ssd card in the card reader-- mmckblk1.  Using the grub> I find only the efi-boot partition on hd0,gpt1).  The grub prompt tells me the file system on the other partitions of hd0 (which is mmcblk1) are "unknown".  From the grub promt I can list the contents of gpt1 (it is the efi-boot partition on mmcblk1).  So the problem appears to be with grub, not with the bios.

Still, the bios does not recognize mmcblk1 (the sdd drive in the card reader), because if I install grub on mmcblk1 EFI-boot partition, it doesn't show up on the Boot Option Menu.  It does have the option to boot a EFI file, but I think that file is in mmcblk0.

HP AX01NR is an "HP Stream"  netbook with 4 GB ram and a 32 GB SSD.

Hi

Try WinKey + R and typing msinfo32 to find your SKU (or for the more enlightened amongst us)

Re-assuring that mine is a modern BIOS with 5.25" 1.2 MB floppy option; so where did I put them?

The most versatile boot manager/loader I know of is  rEFIt and it's cousin rEFInd

There is of course LiLo with EFI capabilities etc etc.

UEFI/EFI Bootloader Features

BIOS Bootloader

ELILO

Grub 2

Kernel EFI stub loader

rEFIt

rEFInd

Grub 0.97

Possibilties that cross my empty skull are...

Place /home onto the microSD card and see if it can utilised thataway.
rEFI* and place it on DSK 0 and get it to pass over to grub.

On my iMac it would list usb drives to boot Mavericks, Linux etc as well as listing DVD, W10 etc on the main Drive.

If in doubt please ask.

Thanks for all the help.  There is no problem with the mmc card or the bios.  The main drive, mmcblk0, is too small for windows.  Windows update wants 8 gigs free, and I can't get that.  So I installed elementary os on mmcblk0.  It is working fine.  There is lots of room.
