Hi everyone!!
I am dealing with the "both shift keys are not working" but on top of it, caps lock activated works with letters but not with symbols (e.g. if i have caps lock activated i can have capital letters but can't have the letters on top of the numbers) and thats frigging important to have the @ sign, right?
I did EVERYTHING suggested in the forums, across the internet.... sticky keys, keyboard settings, uninstall the keyboard driver, (it always reinstalls the microsoft ps/2 driver, outdated from 2006), reset the bios to defaults....nothing worked so i ordered not only 1 but 2! palmrests since hardware can be at fault, right? did all the work and guess what....didn't change a THING! shifts are still not working, caps lock only helps with letters not symbols, grrr...so i tried to get smart and live booted linux to find out whats going on....guess what? same issue!!! at this point i believe it is a BIOS issue but i updated to the latest available bios...is there a way to get an original BIOS for my laptop since the laptop t one point worked when it came out of the store.....(hey HP employees, i am begging for a link?)
Thanks for listening to my rant and everything thrown my way.....

Hi @iamtherealdeal,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your frustration with the keyboard issues on your HP Notebook. It's unfortunate that you've tried several troubleshooting steps without success. Since you've already tried both hardware and software solutions, it's worth considering some additional steps and possible solutions.
- Check for System Updates: Make sure your operating system is up-to-date with the latest updates and patches. Sometimes, system updates can address compatibility issues.
- BIOS/UEFI Settings: You've mentioned updating the BIOS, but you might want to check if there are any advanced settings in the BIOS/UEFI related to the keyboard. Make sure you follow the correct procedure to update the BIOS to avoid any potential issues.
- Driver Updates: In addition to the keyboard driver, check if there are other drivers related to input devices or chipset that might need updating. Visit the official HP support website for your laptop model and download the latest drivers.
- External Keyboard: As a temporary solution, you can use an external USB keyboard to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem is specific to the laptop's internal keyboard or if it's a broader system issue.
- System Restore: If the issue started after a recent software installation or update, consider performing a system restore to a point before the problem began.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4!!
Thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it....
As for your suggestions, i already did all of it prior to posting....
One thing i didn't mention is that at one point this particular laptop had a battery failure, one where the battery was swollen up and after exchanging the battery the laptop booted again....and with my understanding if the chip controlling the keyboard connector fails, it fails completely? i am familiar with board level fixes like soldering and stuff...
Anway, i will keep you posted!!
Best, Frank
