HP ENVY Laptop 13-ba1000 (1F4E3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

took out original battery because it only lasted about 3 hours before requiring a charge. It always charged back to 99% +. Brand new battery wont charge more than 80% despite being plugged in and charging for more than 1 day. Battery check says it needs to calibrate, but to do this the battery must be at 100% or 99%. Cant get there yet. adaptive battery charging is diabled.

@Mark20260426, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Battery Calibration for HP ENVY Laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

When experiencing battery issues with your HP ENVY Laptop, particularly when a new battery doesn't charge more than 80%, it might be required to perform a battery calibration. Calibration ensures that the battery gauge accurately reflects the charge level. Here's a step-by-step guide to assist with the calibration process:

Steps to Calibrate Your Battery

Check Your Battery Health: Ensure the battery health feature is turned off, so it charges beyond the default limits.

Charge Fully: Plug the laptop into the AC adapter without using the laptop during charging or go to HP Power Manager and choose Maximize My Battery Health to try to push the charge beyond 80% if the laptop battery is removed infrequently.

Disable Hibernation:

  • Navigate to Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Power Options > Hibernate tab.
  • Deselect "Enable Hibernation" if it is selected.

Discharge the Battery:

  • Use the laptop on battery power and avoid any power-saving features to discharge it.
  • Save your work regularly to avoid loss of data in case of sudden shutdown.

Recharge and Calibrate:

  • Plug in the AC adapter and charge until it reaches maximum capacity.
  • After fully charging the battery, run the HP Battery Check to complete the calibration process, which might provide different results.

Re-enable Hibernation:

  • After calibration, return to the Hibernate tab and select "Enable Hibernation".

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks for your info and reply. HP directions in their support site lacks good direction.

Many of the references in your reply are not available on my ENVY. For instance, I have no power management listed, also no hibernation, no battery health management.

My new battery will charge, but sometimes I need to toggle the adaptive battery enable/disable to start the charging which then gets to 100%. I have run the automatic battery calibration process twice. According to the process it should charging when I plug in the charger at the end of the optimization process. the battery does not charge. So, the second time I tuned on the computer and the amber charging light came on. But it tuned white when I closed the computer. So, I turned on the computer and left it on and closed the lid, keeping the amber light on.

Interestingly, I changed batteries from the original one that came with the computer because it was not holding capacity for more than about 3 or 4 hours. It always charged to 100%.

I very much appreciated your reply and look forward to anything else you can provide. Thanks very much.

Hi @Mark20260426

Thanks for the detailed update, and I really appreciate your patience throughout this!

It sounds like you're doing all the right things, and I understand how frustrating it is when a brand-new battery doesn’t behave as expected — especially after trying multiple calibration steps.

Since your system doesn't show standard battery settings like Power Management or Battery Health Management, and you're needing to toggle Adaptive Battery Charging just to get a full charge, this could point to either a firmware-level charging threshold or a potential compatibility quirk with the new battery.

Here are a couple of quick things you can try:

BIOS Update – Sometimes an outdated BIOS can interfere with charging behavior. You can check for updates via HP Support Assistant or the HP Drivers & Downloads page.

Hard Reset – Fully shut down your laptop, disconnect all devices, remove the power adapter, and press and hold the power button for 15 seconds. Then reconnect and try charging again.

Battery Drivers – In Device Manager, under "Batteries", right-click both Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, uninstall them, and restart your laptop.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
