Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

This machine pulled apart at the hinge when trying to open it. IT WAS NOT DROPPED OR OTHERWISE MISTREATED. It was fine when closed and then the next morning broke when trying to open it. The warranty expired less than a month ago. The computer has not been used for a year - less than 9 months actually. I was told it would cost $400 to have HP fix it. I called local repair places and they said this is a common issue with HP laptops - the hinges break. This seems to be a manufacturing defect and ought to be covered even if the warranty  is 3 weeks past expiration. I have checked in this support community and it seems this problem goes back several years and has yet to be addressed by HP (in terms of correcting the defect). Has anyone else had this problem and have you found a way to get HP to take care of it? My attempts to talk with someone, or otherwise get heard have been entirely thwarted: endlessly transferred between departments and eventually just cut off. Any help would be appreciated.

HP agreed to repair this computer as if under warranty, i.e. at no cost to me, for which I am very grateful. However, they had no solution for preventing this from happening again, except the one I offered: leave the computer open so the poorly designed/manufactured hinge doesn't have to be used. Since this is not a one-machine, one-year, issue, (i.e. others have been reporting the same thing since at least 2015) one would hope that HP would have corrected it. Makes it very difficult to want to go with this brand next time, especially when my household has 3 other laptops, of 3 different brands, that have been in service for over 6 years and never had a single problem.
