My charger got wet and stopped working. Can I use a charger from a different HP model? I checked and they have the same amperage and voltage.

@susy9106, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the replacement charger has the same voltage and amperage as your original HP charger, and the connector fits properly, then yes, it is generally safe to use it temporarily. However, here are a few important things to double-check:

What to Confirm Before Using Another HP Charger:

  1. Voltage (V): Must match exactly (e.g., 19.5V).
  2. Amperage (A): Should be the same or higher (e.g., if your laptop needs 3.33A, a 4.74A charger is okay).
  3. Connector Type: Must fit snugly and securely into your laptop’s charging port.
  4. Polarity: Most HP chargers use center-positive polarity, but it’s good to confirm.
  5. Wattage (W): Should be equal to or greater than your original charger’s wattage (W = V × A).

Caution:

  • Do not use a charger with a different voltage, even if the connector fits.
  • Avoid long-term use of a different model’s charger unless it’s officially compatible.
  • Inspect the wet charger: If it’s still damp inside, don’t plug it in—it could short-circuit or cause damage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
