I have the C usb supplied with the phone but it does not seem to charge

That's a slightly different issue. It should charge. Does the phone get recognized so that you can access the music with itunes?

Hey thanks very much for your help - yes it does work, whilst the phone was brand new, I think there was a bit of debris/plastic  in the lightning socket of the phone, when I tried it with an IPhone X it worked so I checked the port on the 13 and cleared out the debris it connected to ITunes and started charging (very quickly) straight away.
