Yes, you can upgrade 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA to 1TB or 2TB 2.5" SSD (500GB is too small). For RAM, you can have following upgrade options
(a) To 8GB: Keep existing 4GB and add 4GB to slot 2,
(b) To 12GB: Keep 4GB and add 8GB to slot 2,
(c) To 16GB: Discard 4GB and add 8GB to both slots.
