I can explore it. there also seems to be a firmware update. i need to move data from an external drive to format the external drive since i cannot explore the external drive without explorer shutting down and the taskbar refreshing. that doesn't happen when exploring anything else.

Hello @JoshuaCaleb
To get a clear view what is wrong with your external drive, please do the following:
(1) Install CrystalDiskInfo to get a S.M.A.R.T. status of your external drive
https://crystalmark.info/en/download/#CrystalDiskInfo
(2) Please post a screenshot here
(3) I answer your question

Check the size (MB/GB) of the data to be backed up. If you have enough space on the internal SSD, you can do it (temporary).

1) i want to install that crystaldisk software
2) that message is not an error message. it is here:
CrystalDiskInfo - Crystal Dew World [en] (crystalmark.info)
so that server requirement is there, and i was asking about that softwarre requirement for NVME support and server 2016. i found that i probably have the first thing.

I thought i needed to copy to the Solid State Hard Drive for backup, and the External hard drive was corrupt and windows only couldn't search that external drive.
So, this may not be the case, and i may need to scan the external hard drive and the solid state hard drive. However, i found that i searched the external hard drive, then multiple external drives, then the data drive, and at first, only the My Passport showed Explorer to shut down. I don't know really what is going on. So i am asking on microsoft community, and here.
I found that the other day, I searched the Data drive after i copied into the solid state drive, and i probably did that more than once. Explorer did not shut down and refresh the task bar. A few minutes ago, it did the first time. Now it is searching, and it did that. So I am scanning for a virus. I do not know if it is something like that.
It seems reasonable that there is some microsoft file that is causing this. Have you heard of such a thing. I think that I looked up something related to this recently, and i tried some fixes, and it didn't work.
It logically seems like there is something messed up with explorer and the search feature, and it won't mess up all the time. However, for some reason, it happened all the time on one external drive, but won't always occur when searching everything else. Does this even make sense?

those two fast tests on test 1 passed. However, I noticed that both had an option to continue. The first one also had said that battery needs calibrated.
the system test I chose to continue after the fast test and it said “fast test 2,” and it said it would take around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Is that part of the fast test for a second test that is longer?
i noticed windows also has logs from windows explorer and search. I will discuss with Microsoft support. Please let me know if there are two fast tests #2. I understand the extensive tests take around two hours. I might need to troubleshoot with HP and Microsoft. I know the software has had issues after updates, but there seems to be hardware conflicts with the software sometimes.
i should not have to calibrate the battery after draining it before using it initially.
