Hi @WonTonJon,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Notebook is not recognizing the CD device or optical drive in the system, there are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check device manager: Press the Windows key + X and select "Device Manager." Look for the CD/DVD drive under the "DVD/CD-ROM drives" category. If you see a yellow exclamation mark or a red "X" next to the drive, it indicates a problem with the driver or the device itself.
  • Update or reinstall the driver: Right-click on the CD/DVD drive in the Device Manager and select "Update driver" or "Uninstall device." If you choose to update the driver, Windows will search for the latest driver online and install it. If you choose to uninstall the device, restart your computer, and Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
  • Check BIOS settings: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS or UEFI settings. Look for any options related to the CD/DVD drive or SATA settings and ensure they are enabled. Save the changes and exit the BIOS.
  • Physical connection: Make sure that the CD/DVD drive is properly connected to the motherboard. If you are comfortable doing so, you can try disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, ensuring that the cables are securely attached.
  • Test with different discs: Try using different CDs or DVDs to verify if the issue is specific to a particular disc or if the drive is not working with any discs.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
