That would indicate a software is running that is expecting something from the drive. Look in Task Manager to see what it might be. Stop unwanted software from running until it quits, unless you know what it is.

To clarify - the CD rom is spinning on occasion with no disk?

Well some unkown software is asking for access to the drive. Leave the drive drawer open and see if an error pops up complaining about the drive.

If you cnnot find the software that is asking the drive for information, and it bothers you that much, then make a backup of the important data and reinstall Windows.
