I have the 4540s and if an external hdd is attached, it will not boot.

I have the internal hdd set as primary boot.

The message that comes up says to press esc,  to enter start up options, but that does nothing.

I spent an hour with hp support-useless.

I have done a BIOS update - no help.

Any advice appreciated.

Not sure what you mean about the warehouse reference.

I updated the USB ports and that solved the problem.

Thanks for reply.

PSC.

I have not found one in the warehouse yet.

But try this.

Go into the BIOS and remove the USB as one of the boot devices.

Let us know.

I will keep looking for one.

"Warehouse"

I am part owner of a laptop recycling company.

We have around 50,000 to 100,000 laptops in the warehouse's at any time.
