Hello support community,

Having trouble adding additional 8GB to my laptop. Has A9-9410 processor and 8GB 820570-005 in first memory slot.

Manual says will support 16GB. Put a PNY DDR4 PC4-19200 in the second slot but laptop did not turn on - just intermittent

flashing on the screen. Took it out and laptop working again. My questions are:

should the new additional memory work? if not, why? do I need to change any settings for the laptop to recognize it?

Thanks.

Why not add SAME existing RAM to your machine OR using HP part ? The following tool shows you what is its existing RAM

Regards.

Thanks for your suggestion, BH.

It was not clear to me if indeed the exact  same RAM is required when adding RAM.

HP part 820570-005 not available in the HP store. Manual says

"DDR4-1866 Single Channel Support (Stoney Ridge)
 DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM Support

Supports up to 16GB max system memory"

So, I put in the PNY 2400 MHz part I could find locally, which says it also works at 2133MHz,

(but does not mention operating at 1866MHz though).

Is that the issue with my attempt at adding RAM?

Thanks.

Hi, @abikerguy

I recommend you return the PNY chip to BBY if that is where you bought it and order one of these...should be guaranteed to work according to Crucial.

Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT8G4SFS824A | Crucial.com

The memory will automatically bridge to 1866 MHz.

I used the same PNY DDR4-2400 memory you bought in a HP Thin Client t630 with an AMD processor that only runs at 1866 MHz and it worked fine.

Your notebook probably just doesn't like the memory.

It happens.

Hello Paul,

Thanks for your reply.

Correct, I expect I can return it to BBY if it is not going to work or I am unable

to get it to work, but before I do

Should I just 'try it again' with the PNY I have based on your experience

that it [PC4-19200] worked for you with a 1866MHz AMD processor

so it "should ?" work for me and maybe I just didn't put it in properly?

Or is it possible something else is going on with my laptop that would

account for it not 'liking this memory', and that might also not like the

particular choice you have suggested?

Thanks.

You're very welcome.

My situation was slightly different from yours.

My PC was not meant to run a full version of Windows, hence the name 'Thin Client.'

It came with an 8 GB SSD (yes 8 GB). and 4 GB of DDR4-2400 memory.

I put a 250 GB WD Blue M.2 SATA SSD in place of the 8 GB SSD.

I knew that in order for that platform to have any chance of running W10 Pro, I had to bolster up the memory.

Normally, I would have bought the Crucial memory that I recommended for your notebook, but I had some BBY gift cards and the PNY was the only memory they had that was a decent price.

So, I took a gamble on buying 2 x 8 GB of the PNY DDR4-2400 memory and that may be why it worked.

I did not try to mix it with the HP memory.

So, you have a tough call to make...return the PNY memory and get the Crucial memory which almost always works with another brand of memory.

Or remove the HP memory, buy a second PNY chip and hope it works with two of the same PNY chips like mine did.

The second option kind of wastes money though, but you may be in a hurry to just finish off the project and get on with it.

The deciding factor to me would be to remove the HP chip and see if the notebook works off the single 8 GB PNY chip.

If it does, the second PNY chip should work too.

If you read the reviews on the memory, you will see that it works in some HP notebooks and not in others, and you will probably see my review on there too indicating it worked in the t630.
