Hi @yearwithoutrain,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your laptop is indeed experiencing overheating issues, especially during gaming. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve or mitigate the problem:
Check and Clean Cooling System:
- Ensure that the laptop vents and fans are not obstructed by dust or debris. Use compressed air to clean out any dust buildup. Improper airflow can significantly contribute to overheating.
Laptop Placement:
- Make sure your laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface that allows for adequate ventilation. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches that can block airflow.
Update Drivers:
- Ensure that your graphics card drivers and chipset drivers are up to date. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause performance issues that lead to overheating.
Power Settings:
- Check your laptop’s power settings and make sure it is not set to a mode that limits CPU performance. Sometimes, 'power saver' modes can throttle the CPU to reduce heat.
BIOS Update:
- Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop from the manufacturer’s website. BIOS updates can sometimes include optimizations that improve thermal management.
Monitor CPU Usage:
- Keep an eye on your CPU usage while gaming. If the CPU usage is constantly very high (close to 100%), it can cause overheating. You might need to adjust in-game settings to reduce CPU load.
Cooling Pad:
- Consider using a laptop cooling pad with additional fans to help improve airflow and reduce temperatures.
Undervolting (Advanced):
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
