pavillion g6
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a hp pavillion g6-1189sa running on windows 7 with an i3 cpu. My question is can I just switch the cpu to an i5 and switch it back on and it will recognise it automatically or do I have to change bios settings or anything else before it'll work?

Hi:

Looking at the service manual for your notebook it appears you can upgrade to the Intel Core i5-480M processor.

That should be a plug and play operation.  The processor should automatically be recognized.

Just make sure that you properly clean the heat sink contact points and reapply the thermal compound.

Personally, I don't think such an upgrade would make a huge difference in performance.

That's great thanks. Makes things a bit easier for me. I'm confident enough with changing components, was just unsure about what to do from there but if you say it's plug and play that solves my problem. Thanks for your help.
