Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

hi, iam a bit confused right now. I have a laptop with a gl40 cpipset with socket p478 and iam currently running an intel celeron 900 cpu. I searched all of the internet for the absolute best cpu upgarde option because i want to milk all of the performance i can from this laptop. so my question is, can i put an intel T8300 in it?

-If yes do i have to update the bios in windows 10? (current bios 6GET18WW(V1.09), 22/05/2009)

-if the T8300 wont work which cpu is the best of the best the supports the gl40

@leftlord,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Without providing more information, specifically your laptop and motherboard model, we cannot answer your question.

Please type in System Information in your Windows search bar, and left-click on the System Information App.  Locate "System SKU" and "BaseBoard Product" and provide the information found to the right of these items.

The following link provides some information of processor compatibility, but please note that socket and/or chipset compatibility may not guarantee CPU compatibility on your laptop: CPU-Upgrade: Intel Mobile Celeron 900 CPU.

Be reminded that Intel elsewhere noted, quote (emphasis added):

"Important: Below is a support list for the GL40 Express chipset, and not a support list for your motherboard, built on that chipset. The chipset is only one of key elements that determine CPU compatibility. Other key factors are: socket type, package type, maximum Thermal Design Power, BIOS version, CPU core name and stepping. For that reason not all motherboards, built on the chipset, will be compatible with all listed processors. Please use the list only as a guidance."

Kind Regards,

Hi, @leftlord

Your notebook's chipset is limited to running processors that have a max FSB speed of 800 MHz.

Generally speaking, the best processor your GL40 chipset can run would be the T9500.

The T8300 also has an 800 MHz FSB, so that should work too.

Regardless of what model your notebook has, I can tell you that none of the service manuals for any HP model with a GL40 chipset will list the above two processors as supported.

One model series lists the T6600 as the best processor you can install.

Most of them do not even go that high.
