Pavilion dv7-4180us all stock except for W10 upgrade
HP says system can use up to 16Gb if I have the intel cpu which I do. (AMD cpu can only handle 8 Gb max according to HP documentation)
Bought 16Gb of memory ( 2x8) ...
16GB Kit (2X8GB) DDR3 1333MHz Sodimm Ram PC3-10600 PC3-10600S 1.5V CL9 204 Pin 2RX8 Dual Rank Non-ECC Unbuffered
Installed and laptop wont boot. W10 starts an autorepair routine that goes to nowhere.
Shut down and restarted fine with old 2X 2Gb ram reinstalled.
Supplier of ram says slow down the machine but bios does not give me control over that so am stuck
Could shop again and try installing 2x 4GB but would prefer 2x8Gb if I can make it work.
Any ideas that may help would be greatly appreciated
Old post from 2012 says 2x8Gb will work ...

Hi:
it is extremely difficult to find the right memory for HP notebooks with the first gen Intel core processors.
Buy 2 x 4 GB of this memory, and it should work just fine.
You can read this discussion for more info...

Your notebook cannot run 2 x 8 GB of memory. See chapter 1, page 3 of your notebook's service manual...
Not until the Intel second generation core processors came out in the dv7-6xxx models could you do that.

Thanks Paul
how do we know my pc is 1st gen intel i5?
i did read in an hp repair guide that it would take 2x8gb and they also showed a part no for the memory cards(see my original post)
I have ordered a set of 2x4gb cards to try and returned the 2x8gb cards for a refund
it is quite confusing to say the least
if i want more speed would a SSDrive now be a good idea?
thank you for looking at this again

You're very welcome, Bob.
You can tell the i5-460M is a first generation processor by its number.
Second generation through 9th gen processors have 4 numbers after the i5-
For example, all 2nd gen processors start with a i#-2###, 3rd i#-3xxx and so forth.
Yes, if your notebook currently has a stock 2.5" mechanical hard drive, I would highly recommend replacing it with a 2.5" SSD.
This is the model I recommend for I believe it has the best performance for the price. This is the 500 GB model...
