Almost forgot to mention it started doing a few other odd things over the last week such as the touchscreen going nuts registering phantom touches endlessly until i close/hibernate/shutdown it.

Hi @Noctuabundus ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue with your HP ENVY m6
Ultrabook and battery issues. You could check this document on testing and calibrating the battery using HP Support Assistant. It gives HP Battery Check results with links that could help.
Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet, and into the computer. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector for best results.
If that does not help try to turn on the computer you start to press F11 repeatedly till the menu opens. You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.
Hope this helps you out, Please let me know.
Thanks.

I am currently writing this message from said computer. As I am outside my warranty anyways and I'm currently stretched too thin financially to afford to pay for official assistance I decided that I had nothing to lose by opening it up and pulling the battery. Previously I was shy about opening it because after pulling all of the screws it still didn't want to come apart due to the 50 snap tabs holding the bottom on and my concern about breaking something without further research. I looked up the schematics and was assured that I did indeed remove all of my screws and so I went to town on the bottom plate, slowly working my way around with a couple small flathead screwdrivers. After taking a moment to clean out some of the crud that made its way down inside I proceeded to d/c the battery. Then I plugged the power cord back in and followed with holding the power button down for 30 seconds as was suggested by multiple battery cycling tutorials(some say 10 seconds, others 30, fig go big or go home). Currently I am running off of straight power with no bat and after typing this I will shut her back down and try plugging the battery back in to confirm if it is faulty. From there I will probably follow up with some bat callibration sequences if I'm able to run with it plugged back in. If not then I will just have to work with keeping it plugged in until I can get around to getting a replacement. I don't know why I didn't attempt this sooner as I build desktops and frequently work on other people's laptops....I guess just something about visualizing all of those hard earned dollars I spent riding on my tech skills and it being an ultrabook filled with all of those delicate small pieces.
So yeah, if you have the $ and lack the experience then I suggest finding someone else to hold accountable before you accidently turn a cheap fix into an expensive paper weight. If you have nothing to lose then it might be worth giving it a shot. There's a collection of videos on youtube outlining the battery trick and even one that goes over battery replacement on an ultrabook that, although it wasn't the same exact model, was for all intents and purposes quite sufficient. This way I will at least be able to make it through the semester.

Its definitely a faulty battery. With it plugged back in it goes right back to the same power issue. Unplugged battery with plugged in powercord and we're functional again. 1 year and a complete failure is quite a kick in the teeth, especially when I was just thinking that I was impressed with how long it still maintained a charge...

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I am trying this action but nothing seems to change. However, when I connect the AC adapter after removing the battery, I am seeing a white light at the point of contact (indicating a fully charged battery instead of an orange light). I am not sure if there is any auxillary power stored other than the main battery.

I am having same problem. HP Envy Touchsmart M6 Sleekbook turned off suddenly and won't boot now. Opened it, unplugged battery, plugged in wall and tried to power on. The same lights come on, the power button and wi if for a couple of seconds and nothing. This time though the fan did come on, or at least it sounds like a fan, it's a whisper fan so it was always unnoticeable.
Is is there something else I can try? Desperate....
