Hi @USAFSS,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Installing an external DVD/CD RW drive is usually straightforward, as most modern external drives are plug-and-play and do not require additional drivers. However, if your system is not recognizing the device or prompting for drivers, follow these steps.

Check Connections

  • Ensure the external DVD/CD RW drive is properly connected to your computer via USB.
  • If the drive has an additional power cable, make sure it is plugged in.
  • Try using a different USB port.

Check Device Recognition

  • On Windows:
    1. Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
    2. Look under DVD/CD-ROM drives or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    3. If there's a yellow exclamation mark, right-click the device → Update driverSearch automatically for drivers.
  • On Mac:
    1. Click the Apple MenuAbout This MacSystem Report.
    2. Check if the drive appears under USB or Disc Burning.

Install or Update Drivers Manually

  • If Windows doesn’t install the driver automatically:
    1. Visit the manufacturer’s website of the DVD/CD RW drive.
    2. Search for drivers based on the model number.
    3. Download and install the required drivers.

Enable the Drive (Windows)

  • If the drive isn’t showing up:
    1. Open Disk Management (Win + X → Disk Management).
    2. If the drive appears but has no letter assigned, right-click it → Change Drive Letter and PathsAssign a letter.

Check BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2, F10, or DEL during boot).
  • Look for USB Configuration or Boot Devices to ensure the external drive is enabled.

Try Another Computer

  • Plug the external DVD/CD drive into another PC to check if the issue is with the drive itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
