HP Laptop PC 17-by4000 (18B36AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought my new HP and it does not have a hard drive on the side.  However. I have an external hard drive. I plug it into the USB port and nothing happens.  The drive was purchased a few years ago and worked on my other HP which was upgraded to Windows 10.

I need to know if I can use it on this computer.

I don't know what do you mean. Machine should have INTERNAL hard drive. What is your HP Laptop PC 17-by4000 (18B36AV) machine ? It could be one of the following over 50 machines

              https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/product-specs/hp-laptop-pc-17-by4000/model/38752977

For example   :          HP Laptop 17-by4063cl

Your machine should have 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5Gbps signaling rate ports, pow old your external HDD ? Please try other USB port, USB-A ports should be backward compatible therefore it should be able to "see" older external drives.

Regards.

following up, my computer sn I believe is 1GCLJ321. I plugged the hard drive in the other ports, still did not read it. The drive I think is somewhere in the 6 to 10 year old range.
