Hi @zep108,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yes, you can install an additional internal hard drive in your HP ENVY Desktop PC, provided there is an available drive bay and SATA port (or M.2 slot for SSDs).
Steps to Install an Additional Hard Drive:
Check Compatibility: Verify if your HP ENVY desktop has a free drive bay and SATA port (or an available M.2 slot if you want to install an SSD). Refer to your desktop’s user manual or check online for your specific model’s specifications.
Purchase a Compatible Drive: Depending on your needs, you can either buy a traditional 3.5" or 2.5" SATA hard drive (HDD) or an M.2/NVMe SSD for faster performance.
Gather Tools: You'll need a Phillips screwdriver and SATA data and power cables (if you're installing a SATA drive).
Power Down and Open the Case:
- Shut down your PC and unplug it.
- Open the desktop case by removing the screws on the back panel (consult your manual for the exact steps).
Install the Hard Drive:
- For SATA HDD/SSD: Insert the drive into an empty bay, secure it with screws, and connect the SATA data and power cables.
- For M.2 SSD: Locate the M.2 slot on the motherboard, insert the SSD at an angle, then press it down and secure it with a screw.
Connect the Drive:
- If installing a SATA drive, connect one end of the SATA data cable to the hard drive and the other to the motherboard.
- Ensure the power cable from the PSU is connected to the drive.
Close the Case and Boot Up: Close the case, plug the desktop back in, and boot up the PC.
Initialize and Format the Drive:
- Once in Windows, open "Disk Management" (Win + X → Disk Management).
- Your new drive should appear as "unallocated space." Right-click it and select "Initialize," then format it to your desired file system (usually NTFS).
After this, your new drive should be ready for use!
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
