When I turn on the laptop, the fan turns on. The fan is constantly running and the noise is louder than my old laptop. For now, I am only using it to watch videos and surf the web but when I do, the fan gets louder. Is it normal for the fan to always be on? . If it is normal for the fan to alway be on, is there a way to make it quieter because it may bother some people in the library?

Hi @Abhishek787,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It's fairly normal for gaming laptops like your HP Pavilion 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop PC to have their fans running most of the time, even during light tasks like watching videos or browsing the web. Gaming laptops are designed for high performance and tend to have more aggressive cooling settings to prevent overheating.
Why is the fan always running?
- High-performance mode – Your laptop may be set to Best Performance mode in Windows or in the HP Command Center, which keeps the fan running more often.
- Background processes – Some apps or Windows services may be using more CPU, causing the fan to kick in.
- Dust buildup – If the laptop has been used for a while, dust accumulation can make the fan work harder.
- BIOS or driver issues – Outdated BIOS or drivers can sometimes cause fan speed issues.
- Cooling design – Gaming laptops have more powerful hardware, which generates more heat, leading to fans running more frequently.
How to Make the Fan Quieter
Adjust Power Settings
- Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery.
- Click Power Mode and select Balanced or Best Power Efficiency instead of Best Performance.
Use HP Command Center
- Open HP Command Center (pre-installed on your laptop).
- Select Cool Mode or Quiet Mode to reduce fan noise.
Limit CPU Usage
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check if any background processes are consuming high CPU.
- Close unnecessary apps running in the background.
Update BIOS & Drivers
- Go to HP Support Assistant or visit HP’s website to check for BIOS updates and latest drivers.
Clean the Vents
- If the laptop is a bit older, dust buildup can make fans work harder. Use compressed air to clean the vents gently.
Use a Cooling Pad
- A laptop cooling pad can help reduce internal heat and might allow the fan to run at lower speeds.
Check Fan Control in BIOS (Advanced Users)
- Restart your laptop and enter BIOS (press Esc or F10 at startup).
- Look for Fan Settings (if available) and see if you can enable a quiet mode.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
