Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?
HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 11

When I turn on the laptop, the fan turns on. The fan is constantly running and the noise is louder than my old laptop. For now, I am only using it to watch videos and surf the web but when I do, the fan gets louder. Is it normal for the fan to always be on? . If it is normal for the fan to alway be on, is there a way to make it quieter because it may bother some people in the library?

Hi @timoth254,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your concern, especially if the notebook is new and the fan seems to be running more often or louder than expected while performing light tasks such as web browsing or watching videos.

A fan running occasionally is normal, but if it is constantly running at a noticeable speed even during light use, there are a few things we should check.

First, a few questions:

  • What is the exact HP laptop model?
  • Do you receive any error messages during startup, such as a 90B Fan Error or any other warning?
  • Does the notebook feel unusually warm or hot to the touch?
  • Is the fan noise present immediately after startup, or does it increase after a few minutes of use?

Check the Placement of the Notebook
Please make sure the notebook is being used on a hard, flat surface such as a desk or table.

If the air vents are blocked by:

  • A bed
  • A blanket
  • A pillow
  • Your lap
  • Any soft surface

The system may increase fan speed to maintain proper temperatures.

Check for Dust or Obstructions
If the notebook has been used for some time, inspect the air vents for any visible dust buildup that could restrict airflow.

Try a BIOS Restore/Recovery
Occasionally, thermal management settings can be affected by firmware issues. Please try a BIOS Recovery:

  1. Shut down the notebook completely.
  2. Press and hold Windows + B
  3. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  4. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Monitor for Overheating
Please let us know:

  • Whether the fan is simply noisy or if the notebook is also becoming very hot.
  • Whether the fan speed changes when the system is idle.
  • Whether you notice high CPU usage in Task Manager while the fan is running.

With the model number and answers to the above questions, we'll be able to provide more specific guidance and determine whether the behavior is normal for the system or if additional troubleshooting is needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
