Hi @AK872,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your screen is flickering and seemingly running in auto mode on your laptop or desktop, it can be caused by various issues, including hardware problems, driver issues, or settings misconfigurations. Here’s a step-by-step guide to diagnose and address the flickering screen issue:

**1. Check for External Causes

  • External Devices: Disconnect any external devices (such as monitors, USB devices, etc.) to see if the flickering persists. Sometimes external connections can cause display issues.

**2. Update Graphics Drivers

  • Device Manager:
    • Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver.
    • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.
  • HP Website: Visit the website of your graphics card  (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) and download the latest drivers for your specific model.

**3. Check Display Refresh Rate

  • Display Settings:
    • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
    • Scroll down and click Advanced display settings.
    • Check the refresh rate and ensure it matches the recommended setting for your monitor. A refresh rate that is too low can cause flickering.

**4. Adjust Power Settings

  • Power Options:
    • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
    • Select High performance or adjust settings to prevent the system from reducing screen brightness or changing display modes automatically.

**5. Disable Hardware Acceleration

  • Browser or Apps:
    • If the flickering occurs in specific applications or web browsers, try disabling hardware acceleration in those apps.
    • For example, in Google Chrome: Go to Settings > Advanced > System and toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available.

**6. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Safe Mode:
    • Boot your computer into Safe Mode (press F8 or Shift + F8 during boot, or access through Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Restart now and choose Safe Mode).
    • Check if the flickering occurs in Safe Mode. If not, it may indicate a software or driver conflict.

**7. Inspect Display and Cables

  • Connections: Ensure that all cables connecting your monitor to the computer are secure and undamaged. A loose or damaged cable can cause display issues.
  • Monitor Test: If using an external monitor, connect it to a different computer or use a different monitor with your computer to identify if the issue is with the monitor or the computer itself.

**8. Update System BIOS

  • BIOS Update:
    • Visit the HP website for your laptop or motherboard and check for BIOS updates.
    • Follow the provided instructions to update your BIOS. This can sometimes resolve display and hardware compatibility issues.

**9. Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • Built-in Diagnostics:
    • Many laptops and desktops have built-in diagnostic tools. Access these tools via the BIOS o

**10. Check for Malware

  • Run a Scan:
    • Use a reputable antivirus or anti-malware program to scan for any malicious software that might be causing system instability or affecting display performance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
