I repeatedly get the message "Free up storage space" on my laptop RCSUL0LR using Windows 10.
RAM 4 GB. Storage 58 GB. 64 bit OS.
Apps and Features: 28,9 GB (no unnecessary apps.)
Temporary files 179 MB. (I remove temp files after receiving the message.)
Why am I repeatedly getting this message?

@CliveGill, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
The “Free up storage space” message on your HP Notebook running Windows 10 is likely due to your device having only 58 GB of total storage, which is quite limited for modern Windows usage. Even with minimal apps and cleared temporary files, Windows and system updates require additional space to function properly.
Here are steps to help you free up space and prevent the warning from recurring:
Step 1: Use Storage Sense
Windows 10 has a built-in tool called Storage Sense that automatically frees up space.
- Go to Settings > System > Storage
- Turn on Storage Sense
- Click Configure Storage Sense or run it now
- Set it to delete temporary files and files in the Recycle Bin regularly
Step 2: Remove Unused Optional Features
Some Windows features (like language packs or handwriting recognition) may be installed but unused.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Optional Features
- Remove any features you don’t use
Step 3: Move Personal Files to External Storage or Cloud
Your Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Downloads folders may contain large files.
- Move files to a USB drive, external HDD/SSD, or cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.)
Step 4: Clean Up System Files
Use Disk Cleanup to remove system files like old Windows updates.
- Press Windows + S, type Disk Cleanup, and open it
- Select your system drive (usually C:)
- Click Clean up system files
- Select items like Windows Update Cleanup, System created Windows Error Reporting, etc.
Step 5: Uninstall Preinstalled Apps (if any)
Even if you don’t see unnecessary apps, some OEM apps may not be visible in the usual list.
Use PowerShell to remove hidden apps:
- Right-click Start > Windows PowerShell (Admin)
- Run:
Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, PackageFullName
Identify and remove unused apps using:
Get-AppxPackage *appname* | Remove-AppxPackage
Step 6: Consider Storage Upgrade
If possible, consider upgrading to a larger SSD. Many HP notebooks allow replacing or adding an SSD.
I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.
Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
