Hi @davrobcarall

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're having an issue with your HP keyboard where the keys or background light aren't functioning, even though you’ve confirmed that the driver is up to date. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Sometimes, a hard reset can resolve minor hardware glitches.

  • Shut down your laptop completely.
  • Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if possible).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and charger.
  • Turn on your laptop and test the keyboard again.

2. Check Keyboard Backlight Settings

If the keyboard backlight is on but the keys aren’t working, ensure that the backlight settings are not disabled or misconfigured. Here’s how you can check:

  • On HP laptops, the keyboard backlight is usually toggled by pressing the F5 or F4 key (it will have a backlight symbol on it).
    • Try pressing the Fn + F5 or Fn + F4 keys to adjust or turn off the backlight and test again.

3. Test the Keyboard in BIOS

Testing your keyboard in the BIOS can help determine if it’s a hardware issue or if something is wrong with the operating system.

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately start pressing the ESC key repeatedly until you see the HP Startup Menu.
  • Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Try typing in the BIOS environment. If the keyboard works in BIOS, then it’s likely a software issue (i.e., a problem with Windows 11 or the keyboard driver).
  • If the keyboard doesn't work in BIOS, it’s likely a hardware issue, and you might need to contact HP support for repair.

4. Reinstall Keyboard Drivers

Sometimes, a corrupt or outdated driver can cause the keyboard to malfunction. Even though you mentioned the driver is up to date, try reinstalling it:

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Keyboards section, right-click on your keyboard, and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Windows will automatically reinstall the keyboard driver after restarting.

5. Check for Windows Updates

Make sure your system is fully updated. Windows 11 may have a fix for keyboard issues:

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
  • Install any available updates and restart your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
