Hi @Mele3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your laptop is making a disturbing noise after changing the hard disk drive. It could be due to several reasons, such as installation issues, hardware faults, or external factors. Here's how you can troubleshoot the issue:

Update BIOS and Hard Drive Firmware:

  • Ensure that your laptop's BIOS and the hard drive firmware are up-to-date. Official HP® Support, as updates can fix compatibility and noise issues.

Check the Power Supply:

  • Examine the AC adapter to ensure it is functioning correctly and is not overloaded. Faulty power can cause the hard drive to make unusual noises.

Isolate the Noise:

  • Disconnect all peripherals, such as USB storage devices and docks, to ensure they are not contributing to the noise.

  • Remove the hard drive and see if the noise persists. This can help determine if it is the hard drive or another component causing the noise.

Test the Hard Drive:

  • Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) tool to test the functionality of the hard drive. Record any failure codes and contact support if necessary.

Check Drive Installation:

  • Ensure the hard drive is securely connected using the correct connectors and cables. Reseat the hard drive and check the flex cable connection.

Verify Hard Drive Sound:

  • Test the hard drive in a verified working computer. If it makes the same noise, it may be a normal sound for that particular drive or indicate a fault with the drive itself.

Consider Noise Type:

  • Some hard drives may make clicking noises when files are highly fragmented. If the drive operates normally but is noisy, it may be advisable to defragment the drive, but ensure not to defragment an SSD.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
